REPUBLIK RASTER

Salzburg – Staatsbrücke
02.05. – 09.05.2025

To commemorate the end of the Second World War on 8 May 1945.

The intervention Republik Raster deals with the symbolic and creative power of national flags – and their possible reinterpretation. The starting point is the question of what happens when the forms and colours of these highly charged symbols are brought into new, unexpected constellations.
The work is a reflection on form and content: states, social systems and models of coexistence are based on fixed structures, just like flags. But they too can be shaped, changed and are open to participation. The focus is therefore on the question of how to preserve what is perceived as valuable – and what needs to be changed in order to meet current social needs.

The existing four Austrian national flags at the ends of the bridge were extended by twelve additional flags in the centre – six on each side of the brisge. These additional flags are conceived as a graphic deconstruction of the national flag: a playful reorganisation intended to encourage active engagement with national symbolism and social participation.
